{"id":49776,"date":"2022-06-05T08:23:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-05T12:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rmcls.com\/?p=49776"},"modified":"2025-06-06T08:20:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T12:20:37","slug":"pmbok-7th-edition-pmp-exam-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rmcls.com\/learn\/blog\/pmbok-7th-edition-pmp-exam-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"PMBOK\u00ae Guide 7th Edition &#038; PMP\u00ae Exam Changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Project Management Institute (PMI) has released the <em>PMBOK\u00ae Guide 7th Edition<\/em> (<em>Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge<\/em>. \u00a0How does this impact your PMP\u00ae exam\u00a0 preparation? \u00a0Let\u2019s cover what you can expect based on PMI\u2019s recent announcement so you can plan accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, <strong>the PMP<\/strong>\u00ae<strong> Exam WILL NOT CHANGE in January 2022<\/strong> <strong>due to the release of <em>PMBOK\u00ae Guide<\/em><\/strong>\u2013<strong>Seventh Edition, <\/strong>according to PMI.<strong> \u00a0<\/strong>The PMP\u00ae exam will continue to be based on the current Exam Content Outline (ECO).<\/p>\n<p>The PMP\u00ae exam undergoes changes as part of a of a continuous improvement process. \u00a0PMBOK <em>Guide<\/em>\u2013Sixth Edition is still relevant to the current PMP exam. Elements from <em>PMBOK Guide 7th <\/em>Edition may be incorporated as part of PMI\u2019s continuous improvement process in the future, but the primary basis for the exam remains the current ECO.<\/p>\n<p>RMC\u2019s current materials are modeled on the existing ECO and because of this RMC is not releasing a new edition of Rita\u2019s Exam Prep book or RMC\u2019s exam materials. We do continuously improve our prep materials and delivery on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<h2><em>PMBOK<\/em><em> Guide 7th<\/em>\u00a0Edition Changes<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#updates\">PMI\u2019s <em>PMBOK<\/em><em>\u00ae<\/em><em> Guide 7th <\/em>Edition Updates<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#materials\"><em>PMBOK\u00ae Guide 7th Edition<\/em> and RMC\u2019s Exam Prep Materials<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#capm\">How Does <em>PMBOK<\/em><em> Guide 7th <\/em>Edition Impact the CAPM\u00ae Exam?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#methods\">PMP Exam and Agile Methods<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 id=\"updates\">PMI\u2019s <em>PMBOK<\/em><em>\u00ae<\/em><em> Guide 7th<\/em>\u00a0Edition Updates<\/h2>\n<p>PMI has provided several updates that tell us what to expect with the release of the <em>PMBOK Guide 7th edition<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>July 2021:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>PMP<\/strong><strong>\u00a0exam is based on the PMP<\/strong>\u00ae<strong> Certification Exam Content Outline (ECO), not the <em>PMBOK<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00ae<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> Guide<\/em><\/strong> or other reference books<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>The Exam Content Outline summarizes the research conducted to create the PMP\u00ae exam and includes the most critical tasks required for project managers to master their role.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The current Exam Content Outline (ECO), dated January 2021, was designed to stay relevant for the foreseeable future, and PMI will give advance notice to the public before a new ECO and corresponding exam are launched.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>PMBOK Guide 7th<\/em>\u00a0Edition will now be a reference to inform the development of the exam items. However, before any validated exam item is added to the exam, there is a rigorous and thorough review and field test cycle.\u00a0 This process takes several months.<\/li>\n<li>Key learnings and concepts from the <em>PMBOK Guide<\/em>\u2013Sixth Edition remain valued and are referenced in sections of the guide (presumably referring to the Seventh Edition).<\/li>\n<li>The <em>PMBOK Guide<\/em> is one of numerous potential inputs into preparing for the exam \u2013 and is listed as a reference \u2013 but is not a test-preparation tool.<\/li>\n<li>The PMP exam is created based on the Exam Content Outline and uses many sources for question development.<\/li>\n<li>More details are available from the <em>PMBOK Guide <\/em>FAQs updated in July 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 id=\"materials\"><em>PMBOK<\/em><em> Guide 7th<\/em>\u00a0Edition and RMC\u2019s Exam Prep Materials<\/h2>\n<p>With the release of the <em>PMBOK Guide 7th<\/em>\u00a0Edition, PMI announced it would be used as a reference to &#8220;inform the development of exam items.&#8221; Unlike previous versions of the <em>PMBOK Guide<\/em><em>\u00ae<\/em>, the Seventh Edition is not creating sweeping changes to the exam itself.<\/p>\n<p>The earlier versions of the <em>PMBOK<\/em><em> Guide<\/em> showed changes to best practices in the field of project management.\u00a0 That is not the case with <em>PMBOK Guide 7th<\/em>, which focuses more on outcomes than practices.\u00a0 Those earlier versions of the <em>PMBOK Guide <\/em>often involved changes in terminology and processes, requiring wholesale changes to the exam and exam preparation materials. This is no longer the case.<\/p>\n<p>Now, PMI says it will be changing the exam gradually over time.\u00a0 This makes sense.\u00a0 The old way PMI made changes gave the impression that knowledge gained under the prior editions of the <em>PMBOK Guide <\/em>was no longer relevant, requiring complete changes in the way project management is done.\u00a0 The incremental approach is more consistent with the way project management practices change over time.<\/p>\n<p>RMC\u2019s current materials are modeled on the existing ECO and are therefore relevant to the PMP\u00ae exam as it is structured today.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2 id=\"capm\">How Does <em>PMBOK<\/em><em> Guide 7th<\/em> Edition Impact the CAPM?<\/h2>\n<p>The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)\u00ae exam will change in January 2023 although PMI has only released limited information about it. We continue to keep in touch with PMI and other sources and will update this post as new information about the CAPM\u00ae exam becomes available. According to PMI, the CAPM\u00ae will follow the <em>PMBOK<\/em>\u00ae <em>Guide<\/em><em>\u2015<\/em>Sixth Edition, specifically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The current CAPM\u00ae exam will continue to be based on the Sixth Edition as dictated by the Exam Content Outline for the CAPM examination.<\/li>\n<li>The Sixth Edition is a test preparation tool that candidates may leverage to prepare for the CAPM exam. (<em>PMBOK<\/em><em> Guide<\/em> FAQs, Updated March 2021)<\/li>\n<li>The current CAPM\u00ae exam is based on <em>the PMBOK<\/em><em>\u00ae<\/em><em> Guide<\/em> \u2013 Sixth Edition.
