Maintaining Your PMP Certification After the Exam

  • Just because you pass the PMP certification exam and receive your credentials doesn’t mean your work is done. PMI requires that you maintain your certification by completing what are known as Professional Development Units (PDUs).
  • How many PDUs will you need to keep your certification? Well, it depends on the certification that you wish to maintain. For your PMP certification, you’ll be required to earn 60 PDUs every three years. The 60 PDUs must have distribution over the three areas of PMIs talent triangle – Technical, Leadership, and Business/Strategic.
  • Note: In addition to getting the required number of PDUs, you’ll need to renew your certification to keep it active every three years. This will also come with a fee.

PMP Exam Updates

There are lots of things happening in the world of project management and we want to keep you up to date.

  • PMI has changed the PMP Exam effective January 2, 2021.
  • A significant difference for the new PMP exam is a change from five performance domains to just three. The new domains will include People, making up 42% of questions, Process with 50% of questions, and Business Environment at 8% of questions.
  • It’s also worth noting that PMI has indicated about half the exam will represent predictive project management approaches with the other half covering agile or hybrid approaches. To get further information, attend one of our free webinars on Taking the PMP Exam: What You Need to Know.
  • Starting in 2020, RMC temporarily suspended public in-person classes. We continue to offer PMP Exam prep classes virtually and will evaluate conducting in-person classes for clients on a case-by-case basis.

What are the professional benefits of completing the Project Management Professional (PMP)®, Certification process and exam?

The PMP certification can earn a higher salary—25% more, on average—than non-certified project managers. You can also advance your career by demonstrating you’re capable of working in project management, whether you are new to the field or have been working in project management for quite some time. Employers recognize the value and rigor of the certification which makes you a more desirable job candidate.

How much time should I spend studying prior to the PMP Exam?
It depends on the way you choose to study. If you choose to study with RMC’s Exam Prep instructor-led virtual class or our PMP eLearning Course, we recommend you follow the study plan and areas of focus developed in class. Your study plan should include taking 2 to 3 tests with an exam simulator to achieve a score of 75% or higher before you take the test. Play Rita’s Process Chart game once a day, tracking your score until you achieve a score of 80%. If you use Rita’s Exam Prep book, we suggest that you read the book once through without doing any Practice Exams. When confident with the material, take each chapter practice exams in one sitting. This will help identify knowledge gaps and where more studying is needed. Continue studying the book, and the PMBOK® Guide, focusing on those gaps, then retake the practice exams in the book. If you do not score 70% or higher overall on the chapter practice exams, consider PMP Exam simulation or a PMP Exam prep course.
