PMP® Exam – Major Changes Coming in 2021

The PMP® Exam will change significantly starting January 2, 2021. Back in June 2019, the Project Management Institute (PMI) released the new PMP® Exam Content Outline for the scheduled PMP Exam change.

Although the exact date of the new exam has changed twice, the nature of the changes to the exam are the same. The new outline shows a change from five domains to three domains, as well as the percentage of questions within each domain. The domains also illustrate the tasks of a project manager, along with the knowledge and skills associated with a project manager’s work.

Those taking the updated exam (January 2, 2021) will need to adjust their study to accommodate changes to the exam content outline.

Next PMP® Exam Change is January 2021

Your best strategy now? Take your exam before the change

RMC’s 9th Edition PMP products and courses are designed to be used for the current exam through the end of 2020. The mid-cycle exam changes (between editions of the PMBOK® Guide) have historically had a wide range of impact. When these kinds of changes occur, we encourage you to submit your application to PMI and get your exam scheduled prior to the change date.

You will need to act quickly to get your application in and get your exam scheduled, but you still have time, and it may be easier than trying to learn the new standard.  A lot depends on your current experience.  If you have questions about whether the current exam or the 2021 exam is more appropriate for you, please register for one of our free monthly PMP Exam Webinars or contact our Customer Support using the contact form or calling 952.846.4484.

RMC has been a leader in preparing students to pass the PMP® exam for decades. Our 9th Edition PMP® Exam Prep products and classes (aligned with the PMBOK® Guide, Sixth Edition) are fully updated for the exam changes last made in March 2018. This is what you want if you plan to take the exam before the end of 2020.

The PMP Exam Content Outline changes occurring in 2021 will require updates to existing study materials and class content. These materials and classes will be released very soon.  Please review the information below for release timelines and product upgrade information.

Which PMP® Exam Should I Take, 2020 or 2021?

If you’re struggling with a decision on taking the current exam or waiting until 2021, we have some hints to guide your thinking.  If you’re still having difficulty after reviewing below, please contact us.  We’ll do our best to help.

Should I take the current (2020) PMP Exam?

  • If you have the qualifications to apply and sit for the exam now, get it done!  Why wait?
  • Get the benefit of being PMP-certified sooner!  If you get the credential now, it could help you demonstrate your value, and, if needed, help you secure a new job in a potentially volatile economic climate.
  • The current PMP Exam is a well-known quantity. Exam parameters, question style, and virtually everything else about the current exam is well known and documented.  In contrast, the new exam is not well known.  The difficulty level is not known.  Uncertainty can increase the breadth of study areas you’ll need in order to prepare.  Additionally, past exam changes required some adjustments after broad release.
  • Although the passing score of the current exam is not published, it is a well-established, consistent figure and it will not change before the end of 2020.

In short, if you qualify to sit for the exam, and you have the time to study and get your education hours in, getting your cert in 2020 is still your best option!

Should I take the new (2021) PMP Exam?

  • Do you have time and availability to study in 2020?  The PMP Exam is not trivial.  It requires disciplined study and 35 training contact hours.  Don’t try to jam it in this year if you don’t have the time.
  • If you don’t have the required experience hours for your application right now, you should probably plan for the new exam.  Get the new book and start studying now!  You can learn new skills and become a better project manager to impact your work today.
  • If you are experienced in Agile or Hybrid, it will help with 50% of exam questions in the new 2021 exam.  Remember that study will still be required—particularly if you don’t have plan-driven project experience.
  • If you prefer to take the exam in a testing center rather than the online-proctored version, then you may have more options in 2021.   We suspect pandemic conditions will decrease in 2021, and along with that, more testing center options will open.  Many testers find the online proctored exam environment is much more restrictive than in-person testing centers.

2021 PMP® Product Update Details

The PMP® Exam Changes are a Big Deal—RMC Has You Covered

RMC is working hard at making required changes to materials in order to align with the new PMP Exam Content Outline.
